Cyclones, Bulldogs claim diamond wins

The action was plentiful on Monday in prep baseball action as the Elizabethton Cyclones and Hampton Bulldogs pulled out wins in their respective contests.

The Elizabethton Cyclones continued to play hot baseball in Three Rivers Conference play as Coach Ryan Presnell’s squad traveled to Bluff City to tangle with the Sullivan East Patriots on Monday evening.

It was a pitching and defensive duel for the first five and a half innings as neither team was willing to budge as goose eggs hung heavily on the scoreboard.

The Patriots finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning when they scored one run taking advantage of a walk and a couple of wild pitches to take the lead 1-0.

Elizabethton finally got the offense rolling in the top of the sixth when they plated four runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Gage Treadway got things going with a single to lead off the inning. Ethan Meier came in to pinch run for Treadway.

A walk to Ashton Wilson put Cyclones on first and second base with no one out as Elijah Birdsong came in to courtesy run for Wilson.

Cooper Tipton laced a single to score Meier and advance Birdsong to second base. An error on a ball hit by Zac Workman loaded the bases for Elizabethton.

A two-run RBI off the bat of Padraig Murphy chased home Meier and Birdsong and allowed Tipton and Birdsong to come home making it a 3-1 game.

Cade Russell’s fielder’s choice allowed Workman to race home to make it 4-1 Cyclones heading to the bottom of the inning.

After the Patriots sliced a couple of runs off the lead in the bottom of the frame making it 4-3, the Cyclones put the game on ice in the top of the seventh inning scoring three more runs.

First baseman Noah Rosato led off the inning roping a double to left field to open the frame. Treadway then stepped to the dish and proceeded to launch a two-run homer to left field scoring making it 6-3 Cyclones.

Workman put the finishing touches on the game when he socked a solo home run to left field to give the game its final score.

Wilson toed the rubber for the first five and one-third of an inning for Elizabethton issuing six hits, three runs, striking out four, and walking three.

Bryson Rollins finished off the final one and two-thirds of an inning allowing no hits, no runs, and striking out two East batters.

Treadway, Wilson, Workman, and Murphy accounted for two hits apiece in a ten-hit Cyclone attack.

Coach Nicholas Perkins Hampton Bulldogs ran their season record to 8-8 on the year and 2-3 in the conference when they dealt the Unaka Rangers a 17-0 shutout.

Starting pitcher Caleb Royston went the four-inning distance in the Mercy-Rule game pitching four innings, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out seven Ranger batters and walking two. Royston also hit one batter in running his record to 2-3 on the season.

Offensively, Morgan Lyons was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Josh Owens also swung a hot bat going 2-for-3 with a double while McKinley Kuhn proved solid batting 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Senior Parker Henry was 2-for-3 with an RBI as well for Hampton.
