Sweeping the Sock Puppets… Elizabethton remains perfect against East Division with win over Burlington

BURLINGTON, NC — The River Riders defeated the Sock Puppets 8-1 at Burlington Athletic Stadium Wednesday night. The River Riders are 4-0 against the Eastern Division this season.

Elizabethton (8-9) starter RHP Robert Bavon (OSU) threw for two innings, striking out three before Jordan Leasure (Tampa) came in relief, facing nine batters in three innings pitched.

Through four innings, the only hit of the game was from River Riders’ second baseman John Montes (UCF), in the top of the third inning.

In the top of the fifth, E-Town sent 10 to the plate and scored five runs.

Third baseman Robin Fernandez (St. Thomas) reached first on a ground ball error to second. Logan Sanders (Pima) singled to place runners on first and second.

With one out Montes walked to load the bases. Right fielder Mario Zabala (Florida International) singled to score Fernandez and Sanders. Shortstop Marcus Brown (OSU) was hit by a pitch for the sixth time this year to load the bases for Chase Adkinson (OSU).

An error by right fielder Isiah Winiker scored Montes from third base and placed Adkinson at first. With two outs, catcher Reagan Guthrie (Regis) drove in Zabala and Brown, 5-0 River Riders.

In the bottom of the sixth, with one out, Sock Puppet (6-11) third baseman Oscar Serratos (Biola) doubled to right field against RHP Philip Berger (William Peace) to end the River Rider no-hit bid.

Burlington’s first baseman Caleb Farmer (Colorado Mesa), brought Serratos home on an RBI single to score the Sock Puppets only run.

In the top of the eighth, the River Riders scored their final three runs. Designated hitter Sam Thompson (TCU) singled to score Zabala. Guthrie scored Adkinson on a sacrifice fly. Finally, Sanders scored Thompson from first on an RBI double.

The River Riders will continue their six-game road trip in Princeton on Thursday and Friday as they play the WhistlePigs. First pitch on Thursday is at 7.
