For the love of God
All my Christian life I have always wondered how, with all of the sinful nature of man, could God possibly continue to love us as he does? People have cursed at him and yet he loves them. People have turned from him and yet he loves them. I have never understood this kind of love.
When someone wrongs us it is in most of our nature to cut them from our lives, sometimes forever. But not God. He is always there, welcoming us back into his waiting arms, and yet I never understood this. We seem to be able to turn our backs on him without any problem whatsoever, and yet he will always be there. And still, I have never understood this. With all of my Bible College learning, with all of my teachings, and with all the mentorships I have had throughout my life, I never understood this kind of love — and then my son was born.
When I first laid eyes on my son my heart leaped and I felt an overwhelming abundance of love in my heart. I wanted to protect him, I wanted to give him all of my knowledge, I wanted to make sure his life would be greater than mine and then and only then did I realize the love of God. He feels the same about us. When my son (now at 7 years) is into everything, trying to see what he can get away with, and throwing his temper tantrums, I still love him as much as when I first held his tiny body in my arms.
I knew nothing about raising a child; I questioned the nurses to death about everything. I had never changed a diaper before and the night he was born I changed ten. I was afraid to hold him because he was so fragile; I had truly never felt like that before and that is only a fraction of what God feels for his people.
I know I have let the Lord down as my son will at times do the same, but we are human and God forgives us for that as well. No matter what stand you have concerning God — if you believe or not — it does not change the fact that he is still there and has an enormous abundance of love for you, his children.
Romans 5:8: “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
