Alan Edward Laws, 72, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness. He was born November 21, 1948 in Elizabethton to the late William Dexter and Oakie Shell Laws.
Alan was a graduate of Cloudland High School and attended Steed College. He served in the United States Army four years during the Vietnam Era. He received the following medals: Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, and The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with Device (1960).
Alan was an avid reader, loved to laugh, loved to go to the beach at Oak Island, N.C., loved the Redskins, loved to scare people and drove like he was driving a tank. He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Laws.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Sherry Grindstaff Laws; his children, Shane and Julie Laws, Mary Ann and Sam King, Milissa and Tim Baumgardner, Brenda and Trevor Petry and Jennifer and Chris Ingram; his grandchildren, Brandon Blevins, Brenten Blevins, Andy and Johna Baumgardner, Madison and J.J. Rouse, Julianne Ingram, Travis Petry, Luke Baumgardner, Kyle Ingram and Alena Petry; his great-grandchildren, Breyden Blevins and Aliias Blevins; his brothers and sisters, Carolyn and Walter McKinney, Gail and Jim Buchanan, Lynn and Easter Laws, Pam and Mike Hughes and Kent Laws.
A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Sunday, September 19, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Blevins officiating. Music will be provided by Brandon Blevins. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of Hermitage Health Center, the staff of Amedisys Hospice and Dr. Robert Walters. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. It is requested that everyone attending the service wear a mask.
