At Roan Mountain, we house, care for, and educate the public on a variety of native animals. We work under an educational permit from TWRA. Currently, we care for three birds of prey and several snakes! As you can imagine, caring for these animals is costly, as their food and health care are a specialty!
All of our animals are non-releasable for a variety of reasons. We frequently program with these animals and never charge for educational programs when using them. Here is your opportunity to support our educational wildlife program and help us care for these animals!
All donations will go to purchase food, pay vet bills, purchase gloves, tethers, falconry equipment, aquarium bedding, and to improve and build more housing facilities for our non-releasable birds of prey.

Miller Farmstead Tour – 11 a.m., 1 p.m. & 2 p.m. Meet at Farmstead front porch. Price is Free. Register for the event. The Dave and Louisa Miller family moved to Strawberry Mountain in 1870, where 3 generations of Millers lived for 90 years. The farmhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places because it reflects the lifestyle of rural subsistence farmers in Appalachian in the early 20th century.
Daily tours are offered to registered guests at 11am, 1pm & 2pm.
To ensure appropriate group sizes, registration is required. Please follow the ticket link to select your tour date & time.
Meet park staff at the farmstead front porch for a guided walk through of the house & outbuildings.
-Tours are free, but donations are gladly accepted and will help with farmstead maintenance and restoration projects.
-By statewide policy, masks are required to enter the farmhouse and will be provided to guests who do not bring their own.
-Pets are not allowed in the house, with the exception of trained service dogs.

Saturday, Oct. 16
Living History at the Miller Farmstead – 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. – Meet at Miller Farmstead. Price is $0.00/ Per Person, $5, $10, $15 $25 / Optional Donation. Register for the event. Come to Roan Mountain for the Fall-O-Dendron Festival, and be sure to stop by the Miller Farmstead to learn how Appalachian subsistence farmers in the early 20th century prepared food for the winter!
9:00 AM – Firecraft: Meet Marco to learn how to make fire without matches. He’ll be demonstrating flint & steel fire-making techniques at the fire ring.
10:00 AM – Butter & Pickles: Join Amanda & Marcianne at the springhouse to learn how farmers prepared and stored perishable food before refrigerators were widely available.
11:00 AM – Roots & Fruits: Join Marco at the root cellar to learn how farmers kept potatoes, carrots, apples & more over the long winter.
1:00 PM – Cider Pressing: Join Amanda, Marcianne and Marco as they try out our new cider press!

Friday, Oct. 22
Hampton Creek Cove Morning Birding Trip – 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. – Meet at Roan Mountain State Park Visitor Center. Price is Free. Register for the event. Attention birders! Ranger Phil Hylen will be offering a free morning birding trip for 10 individuals at scenic Hampton Creek Cove Natural Area to enjoy the fall migration of warblers and hawks from 8-10AM on Friday, October 22nd. Participants will meet at the Roan Mountain State Park Visitor Center Parking Lot prior to motorcading to the Natural Area. This birding trip will cover approximately 2.5 miles of trail total. Be sure to bring good hiking shoes, water, and a camera/binoculars. Be sure to register your free spot today!

Campfire Cocoa – 7:45 p.m. – 8:45 p.m. – Price is $5. Register for the event. Enjoy a classic evening of campfire tales & hot cocoa with Ranger Holland. Cocoa will be provided. Group size is limited and social distancing guidelines apply. Cost:$5.00 per person. Register using the ticket link below. Dress for the weather & meet Ranger Holland at park headquarters. Monday, Oct. 25
Roan Mountain Lodge #566 F.&A.M. will meet in stated communication at 312 West Street at 7 p.m. All members in good standing are encouraged to attend and visiting brethren are welcome. Social distancing guidelines will be followed — 6′ rule — and masks are asked to be worn because of the rise in local COVID-19 cases. Hand sanitizer will be provided.

Friday, Oct. 29
Dutch Oven Cooking Series: Baking – 7 – 8:30 p.m. – Meet at Upper Cabins Parking Lot Firepit. Price is $10.00. Register for the event. Curious about how to cook and care for cast iron cook ware? Join Ranger Phil Hylen for our second Dutch Oven Cooking Series from 7:00 – 8:30PM on Friday, October 29 at the Cabins Firepit located at the cabins 21-30 parking lot (you can’t miss the fire). This lesson will teach the basics of using dutch ovens to bake breads and desserts in the great outdoors using open fire and coals. This lesson will also go over different type of dutch ovens and how to care for them after cooking in them. Participation is limited to 10 people at a cost of $10 per person. Your spot will also include dessert with fresh-made sourdough bread with apple butter and Kerrigold butter as well as a piping hot serving of blackberry cobbler with a scoop of vanilla bean icecream. Bottled water and sweet tea are also provided.

Tomahawk Toss – 3 – 4 p.m. – Price is $5. Register for event. Tomahawks provided. No previous Tomahawk-throwing experience is required to enjoy this fun program. Meet at park headquarters prior to going to the program area.
