Jo Matherly Hickman Cantrell, 81, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at her residence. She was born November 20, 1939 in Elizabethton to the late Fred and Hazel McGee Matherly.
Jo was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, Class of 1957. She was the retired owner of State Line Market and several restaurants. She loved Jesus, her family, traveling, and collecting her beloved teddy bears. She was an avid bowler in her youth.
Jo was a member of Myrtle Beach Christian Church and was a former Trustee of Sims Hill Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse “Sam” Hickman; sisters, Gail Tolley and Jessie Davis and husband Johnny Davis; an infant brother, Glen Matherly; and a son-in-law, Richard Porch.
Survivors include her husband and beloved caregiver, Stan Cantrell, of the home; daughter, Cecelia Ann Porch; her grandchildren, Randi (Brian) Teaster, Travis (Megan) Jack, Matthew (Rebecca) Lovelace and Miranda Lovelace; her great-grandchildren, Ethan Teaster, Weston Teaster, Bodie Jack, London Lovelace, Camden Lovelace, Ryan Peterson, Lydia Lovelace and Jonah Love; her sister, Carolyn (Dallas) Pierce; multiple special nieces and nephews; her brothers-in-law, Michael (Dot) Cantrell and Robert Cantrell; and her sisters-in-law, Carol (Randall) Payne, Lena (Otis) Blankenship and Diane Cantrell.
A service to celebrate the life of Jo will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 17, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with her nephew, Mark Willis, officiating. Music will be provided by Bobby McGee. Interment will follow in the Sims Hill Christian Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Randall Payne, John Duty, John Patterson, Ethan Teaster, Matthew Lovelace, Brad Grindstaff, Brian Teaster and Travis Jack. Honorary pallbearers will be the Elizabethton High School Class of 1957, members of Myrtle Beach Christian Church and members of Sims Hill Christian Church. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of Caris Hospice Health Care for their loving care in her final days.
