Michael Carter joined hundreds of other shoppers early Friday in search of a deal.
“I decided I might as well come by and see the selection of items that Walmart had, and I happened to see this TV,” Carter said about his newly acquired 65-inch Samsung Smart TV. “I have never bought a TV like this before, so I was trying to finally get one, and what better time than on Black Friday.

“While I did look at the deals for a few moments yesterday, I didn’t give them much attention. I just kinda showed up and here I am with a new TV.”

Carter said he preferred in-person shopping to online ordering.

“I have never really been that big on online shopping myself. I do occasionally order things online, but I would much rather go to the stores and purchase things there,” Carter said.

And he didn’t mind the early hours. “I have to work fairly early in the morning anyway, so I am pretty used to getting up early and that wasn’t really a problem for me. I did go to sleep a little bit earlier just to prepare, and I think it all worked out pretty well.”

After Black Friday, shoppers’ focus turns to Small Business Saturday, as local and smaller retailers are showcased.

Misty Counts, owner of Duck Crossing Antique Mall in Downtown Elizabethton, a business that has over 40 vendors and specializes in a variety of items, knows this and said that she is ready for the customers.

“We always love participating in community events that bring people together and bring people to our downtown area,” Counts said. “Small Business Saturday is our second busiest day of the year, right behind the Christmas Open House. While we have been fairly busy today, people make a special effort to shop local on that Saturday, whereas Black Friday is a day where people go anywhere to shop.”

Small Business Saturday is an event in Downtown Elizabethton that features many different sales and events from various local businesses from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information on businesses participating in this event, visit facebook.com/DowntownElizabethton.
