ROAN MOUNTAIN – It didn’t take but one glance at Cloudland head coach Matt Birchfield’s face after the first half to know that he wasn’t a very happy camper with the effort and execution of his Lady Highlander team.
Nursing a 23-10 lead over the visiting Happy Valley Lady Warriors, the Lady Highlanders received the message loud and clear as the second half was played with a different intensity and level of play as Cloudland outscored their visitors 28-16 in the second half to take a convincing 51-26 victory.
Izabella Christman and Karah Fields carried the Lady ‘Landers in the opening 16 minutes of action scoring six points apiece. Fields points came from two treys.
Taylor Hicks, Ryan Turbyfill, and Katie Baldwin also stepped behind the arc to drain a three-ball each in the first half while Ella Birchfield added a deuce.
Happy Valley had three players carry the scoring the half as Kadie Bailey and Scarlett Zeoli contributed four points each and Cayden Anderson scored the other bucket for head coach Dana Hill’s Lady Warriors.
The Lady Highlanders turned up the pressure defensively coming out of the locker room resulting in turnovers which in turn resulted in better offensive opportunities.
Cloudland’s 17-6 third-quarter run put enough separation between the two teams to allow the Lady ‘Landers to cruise to the win.
Fields led the Lady ‘Landers with 12 points in the contest while Christman also hit double figures with 11 points.
As a team, Cloudland connected on eight treys as Fields, Hicks, and Baldwin had two apiece and Kendall Birchfield and Turbyfill collected the other two.
Scarlett Zeoli led the Lady Warriors offensively collecting 11 points for the game. Zeoli was the only Happy Valley player to hit double figures.
