At Roan Mountain, we house, care for, and educate the public on a variety of native animals. We work under an educational permit from TWRA. Currently, we care for three birds of prey and several snakes! As you can imagine, caring for these animals is costly, as their food and health care are a specialty!
All of our animals are non-releasable for a variety of reasons. We frequently program with these animals and never charge for educational programs when using them. Here is your opportunity to support our educational wildlife program and help us care for these animals!
All donations will go to purchase food, pay vet bills, purchase gloves, tethers, falconry equipment, aquarium bedding, and to improve and build more housing facilities for our non-releasable birds of prey.

Roan Mountain First Day Hike – 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Price is $0/Attendee, $10/Attendee (Not Attending)+Donation, $10 Attendee+Donation, $20/Attendee (Not Attending)+Donation, $20/Attendee+Donation. Register for the event. Join Ranger Holland as we stretch our legs on Moonshiner’s Run Trail for the First Hike of 2022! Celebrate the New Year with a moderate two mile loop hike beginning and ending at the Moonshiner’s Run Trailhead. Participants must register for the hike in advance and should dress for the weather conditions. The hike is free but donation options are available at registration that will be used for the improvement of Roan Mountain State Park.

Friday, January 7, 2022
Craft Night – 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Price is Free. Register for the event. Meet at the Conference Center. Whether you’re into needlework, fiber arts, hot glue, or something completely original, we’d love to meet you! We’ll be gathering in the conference center to socialize & work on our various craft projects. The timeline of the gathering is loose, so don’t worry if you can’t come right at 5pm, just stop by anytime after 5pm.
Bring your latest project to work on and a treat to share! The park will provide tables, chairs, a fire & hot coffee.

Saturday, January 8
Historic Weapon Range: The Atlatl – 3 – 4:30 p.m. – Price is $8.00 and register for the event. Meet at Picnic Shelter 3 in the Campground. Learn the art of science of the historical ranged hunting weapon, the atlatl, with Park Ranger Phil Hylen starting at 3:00PM on Saturday, January 8th at Picnic Shelter 3 in the Campground. Participants will step onto our histori weapons range to try their hand at hunting the pre-historic way.
This program is limited to 15 participants with a registration fee of $8.00 per person. This is an outdoor program, so be sure to dress for cold and possible rainy weather.

Logan with Wendy: Building a Winter Fire – 7 p.m. – Price is $12.00 and register for the event. Meet at the Conference Center. Join yoga instructor Wendy Smith for a relaxing fireside yoga & guided meditation experience. Each workshop is suitable for yogis of all levels and hosted in the Roan Mountain State Park Conference Center.
Yoga sessions will be offered 4 times over the weekend:
– Friday, January 14th at 7pm
– Saturday, January 15th at 10am – 11:20 am
– Saturday, January 15th at 7pm
– Sunday, January 16th at 10am
– Bring an open mind, a water bottle & your favorite yoga mat (if you have one, we’ll also have loaners). Class size is limited to 12 participants. Current CDC recommendations regarding social distancing will be followed.

Tomahawk Toss – 2 p.m. – Price is $5.00. Register for the event. Learn to throw a tomahawk!. Join Ranger Holland as we have fun learning a popular frontier pastime.
Tomahawks provided. No previous Tomahawk-throwing experience is required to enjoy this fun program. Meet at Shed #3.

Saturday, January 22
Peg Leg Mine GeoVenture – 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. – Price is $10.00 and register for the event. Register for the event. Join us on Saturday, January 22nd from 10:00 – 11:30AM at the Visitor Center porch to explore the iron mining history of Roan Mountain while exploring the old Peg Leg Mine on a 0.5 mile hike led by Park Ranger Phil Hylen. Guests will see what makes Roan Mountain so attractive to explorers across the world while earning your very own ore and geodes to break open.
This program is limited to 10 individuals with a registration cost of $10.00 per person. Guests are encouraged to wear good hiking shoes and dress for cold and possible wet weather.

Saturday, January 29
Winter Tree Finding – 10 – 11:30 a.m. Price is $10.00/Participant + Book. Register for the event. Meet at Camper Check-In. It can be tricky to identify tree species after the leaves have fallen, but there are other clues we can use to help us. Join Ranger O’Day for a winter walk in the woods and learn how to identify common trees in winter by looking at twigs, bark, and other features. We’ll travel along the Fred Behrend trail for less than two miles, stopping along the way to discuss what we find.
Dress for the weather with sturdy shoes & bring a daypack with water and a snack. Registrants will also receive a copy of “Winter Tree Finder” by May Theilgaard Watts & Tom Watts.
