Hampton Elementary School student, Kylee G. Blair won the Patriot’s Pen contest with an essay titled “How Can I Be A Good American?” Seventeen essays were entered in the contest, which was open to students in grades six through 8. Blair received an award certificate, a hand-made American flag ink pen, and a $50 dollar gift certificate.

Happy Valley High School 10th grade student Levi Holt Taylor won the Voice of Democracy contest, which included 27 entry essays on “America: Where Do We Go From Here?” The contest was open to high school students.

Both Blair and Taylor will advance to state competitions.

For the VFW’s Teacher of the Year competition, awards were given to Mitchell Morton at Hampton Elementary and Brooke Tolley at Happy Valley High School. Both teachers were honored due to their outstanding commitment to teach and promote America’s history, traditions and citizenship.

“We want to recognize those people in the community that are doing great things and that are patriotic in this community,” said VFW Post 2166 Commander Andy Wetzel. “Recognition of people in this community who are hard-working is something we take very serious here, and being involved in this community is the second point of emphasis in our mission statement.”
