Lady ‘Landers fall in overtime to North Greene

In their first Watauga Valley Conference showdown of the season, the contest featuring the Cloudland and North Greene girls was everything it was supposed to be between the two 2021 TSSAA state tournament teams.
During a four minute overtime session, the Lady Huskies managed to outscore Cloudland 7-3 to earn the 42-38 win.
It was a tight battle from start to finish as the Lady Huskies owned a one-point lead at the first stop, 11-10.
Sonya Wagner scored five points in the quarter to give North Greene the early lead. Shelby Davenport added four. Karah Fields netted five points to pace the Lady ‘Landers in the period.
Cloudland flipped the script in the second stanza by outscoring the Lady Huskies 11-9 to take a one-point advantage to the locker room, 21-20.
Treys by Taylor Hicks and Katie Baldwin were key in helping the Lady Highlanders take the halftime lead. Wagner and Brooklynn Anderson scored four each for North Greene.
Both teams came out of the locker room and couldn’t find any footing offensively as a low-scoring third period saw the Lady Huskies even the score at 27-27 after winning the period 7-6.
An evenly played fourth quarter saw the game deadlocked at 35-all forcing the extra period.
In overtime, Davenport scored all seven points for the Lady Huskies hitting 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. A Fields trey accounted for Cloudland’s points.
Wagner led North Greene with 13 points in the game while Davenport finished with 12. Fields paced the Lady Highlanders with 10 points and Saharra McKinney dropped in eight points.
