Rangers split with University High in roundball action

The Unaka Rangers hosted the University High Buccaneers Saturday evening. Two different styles of games were played between the girl’s varsity and the boy’s varsity teams.

The Lady Rangers took on the Lady Buccaneers in a high-speed blowout.
The Lady Rangers quickly took a 16-7 lead in the first quarter. In the second the Lady Rangers scored 26 compared to the Lady Buccaneer’s six points. This gave the Lady Bucs an impossible deficit to come back from.
In the third period, the Lady Bucs and Lady Rangers played evenly, both teams scoring a majority of points in the paint. Both teams scored 14 in this quarter.
With the game pretty much in control, the Lady Rangers played great defense as they held the Lady Bucs to only two points while scoring 12.
Lyndie Ramsey scored a game-high 25 points to lead all scorers while Macy Ensor chipped in with 13 points. Julie Simerly added nine points.
Catie Leonard led the Lady Bucs with 12 points.
Boys – OT

The boy’s varsity game went different from the girls as this was a fast-paced nail-biter for a majority of the game.
The Buccaneers started strong, scoring 16 in the first quarter while the Rangers struck for 11.
In the second period, both team’s offenses showed up with the Bucs scoring 19 to outscore the Rangers with 16.
The Bucs didn’t let up in the third once again scoring big as they put up 15 points in the period. Unaka scored 11 and needed a lot of work in the fourth to stay in the contest.
Coach Aaron Dugger’s Rangers bounced back and dropped 18 on the Bucs while defensively holding the Bucs to only eight which forced this game into overtime.
In overtime, the Bucs scored nine while holding the Rangers to only four in the extra session. The Bucs came out on top with the 65-60 win.
It was a standout game for University High’s John Carter who put up 27 points against the Rangers.
The Ranger’s Joe Blamo was also a name that was heard a lot Saturday evening as he scored 18 helping the Rangers stay in this game.
