The Lady Falcons of Volunteer put the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones into shell shock in the first period.
From that point on, however, it was the Lady Cyclones who were reloading every trip down the floor as they shot down their visitors from Church Hill in Upper Lakes Conference play, 70-48.
Volunteer drained three long-range triples in the opening quarter and jumped out to a 19-13 lead at the first horn.
The Lady Cyclones then went orbital in the second quarter as Coach Lucas Andrews team flipped the script on the Lady Falcons by outgunning Volunteer 25-1 to take a 38-20 lead to the locker room.
Reiley Whitson caught fire hitting for 11 points in the period with three treys to rally her team. Olivia Holly also had a huge hand in the turnaround as torched the nets for a pair of treys in the run.
Lina Lyon added six and Renna Lane two points as both finished with eight points each in the half.
Coming out of the locker room, the Lady Cyclones continued to tickle the twine as the Lady Falcons didn’t have an answer to the hot shooting of Elizabethton.
Four Lady Cyclones finished in double figures led by Lyon with 22 points. Whitson finished with 14 points while Holly and Lane finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Veda Barton finished with 21 to lead the Lady Falcons. Four players finished with six points apiece.
“The whole team started out slow and I don’t know what happened,” said Andrews. “Credit to Volunteer because they came out and shot lights out and made some big shots.
“We told them they could because they are scrappy and physical and they get after you and they did and hit us in the mouth early. I am proud of my girls because that is a big conference win and every one of them is.”
