Happy Valley celebrated Senior Night on Friday at Bayless Gymnasium but things didn’t all go the Warriors way as Johnson County clipped HV 66-40 in boys Three Rivers Conference basketball action.
The Lady Warriors held service with a 57-26 win over the Lady Longhorns with Kenzie Ramey scoring a game-high 19 points.
“My kids came out with the mentality to win a ballgame,” Lady Warriors head coach Dana Hill said. “Johnson County tested us on the boards in the first half, but our defense gave us the opportunity to convert at the other end. We didn’t take many bad shots tonight. We took shots we’re capable of making and we ran our offense and got open shots.”
HV (6-13, 4-2 TRC) took an 11-8 first-period lead and extended to a 24-16 halftime advantage despite the Lady Longhorns and especially Brookanne Hutchins dominating the boards.
Hutchins fouled out in the fourth period but finished with a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Warriors took command in the third period outscoring JC (0-16, 0-5 TRC) 16-6 to open a 40-22 lead going into the final stanza. HV opened the period with a 7-2 run to take a 47-24 advantage with 4:24 remaining in regulation and surrendered just four fourth-quarter points to Johnson County after Hutchins fouled out.
“Johnson County is coming on,” Hill said. “Coach Eller does a great job with her girls, she always has. I challenged my kids at halftime as to who would step up and play. They all did.”
