February Ranger Programs at Roan Mountain State Park

A number of weekend programs have been scheduled for February at Roan Mountain State Park, including the return of the park’s yoga weekend, which was a big hit last year.
The schedule of programs is as follows:
Saturday, February 5 at 1 p.m.
Snakes of Roan Mountain: Join Ranger Phil Hylen and the park’s live snake ambassadors at the Roan Mountain State Park Visitor Center for a fun chance to meet and learn about snakes of the park and Appalachian Highlands. You may be surprised to learn the types of snakes we do and do not have in the high country! (Visitor Center Porch)
Saturday, February 19 at 2 p.m.
Backpacking Trail Meals: Join Ranger James Holland to learn how to prepare a variety of backpacking trail meals. The focus will be on preparing homemade, lightweight meals that are simple, easy, and made with affordable ingredients. Feel free to bring your backpacking stove! (Park HQ/$12 adult/$6 under-12)
Fireside Yoga Weekend: Friday, February 18 – Sunday, February 20
Join yoga instructor Wendy Smith for a relaxing fireside yoga and guided meditation experience. Suitable for yogis of all levels (Conference Center) ($12 per class)
Friday, February 18 at 7 p.m.: Winter Twist
Saturday, February 19 at 10 a.m.: Heart-Centered Yoga
Saturday, February 19 at 7 p.m.: Winter Twist
Sunday, February 20 at 10 a.m.: Heart-Centered Yoga
Sunday, February 20 at 2 p.m.:
Peg Leg Mine GeoVenture: Explore the mining history and geology of Roan Mountain with Ranger Hylen. This half-mile hike will conclude with each guest breaking open their very own piece of “ore” (could be actual ore node, or a geode!). (Visitor Center Porch, $10)
Tomahawk Toss at 2 p.m.: Learn to throw a tomahawk! Join Ranger Holland as we have fun learning a popular frontier pastime. Tomahawks provided. No previous Tomahawk-throwing experience is required to enjoy this fun program. (Shelter No. 3, $5)
Saturday, February 26 at 2 p.m.
Winter Tree Finding: Join Ranger O’Day for a winter walk in the woods and learn how to identify common trees in winter by looking at twigs, bark, and other features. We’ll travel along the Fred Behrend trail for less than two miles. Dress for the weather and bring your day-pack. Registrants will receive a copy of “Winter Tree Finder” by May Theilgaard Watts and Tom Watts. (Camper Check-in, $10)
Sunday, February 27 at 2 p.m.
Leave No Trace: Cathole Confidence! Join Ranger O’Day for a family-friendly Leave No Trace skills workshop that will help you plan ahead and prepare for bathroom breaks in any outdoor setting. Become a confident cathole crapper! We’ll cover all the LNT basics and talk WAG bags and poop tubes!
