FROM STAFF REPORTS
The T.A. Dugger Jr. Lady Cyclones simply couldn’t buy a basket in the first half and that cold start ultimately put the freeze on the rest of the season.
Falling behind 17-1 at the end of the first half, the Lady Cyclones ran out of time in the second half in their efforts to catch up to West Valley as they fell 30-16 at Powell Middle School in the TMSSA Sectionals.
Michelle Shields hit 1-of-2 free throws in the first half for the only points Coach Matt Fox’s team would put on the scoreboard.
Meanwhile, West Valley’s Katie Foster dumped in eight points to put her team out front. Logan Connatser added a trey while Riley Hunt, Theola Mills, and Ali Wilkinson each chipped in with a deuce to build the 17-1 lead.
The Lady Cyclones came out with some zest to start the second half finally putting some points on the board and in the books but still found themselves trailing 26-7 heading into the final quarter of play.
Sadie Williams scored four points and Adrian Heading two points for the Lady Cyclones in the quarter.
Needing a huge rally, the Lady Cyclones gave all they had outscoring West Valley 9-4 but just not enough to catch up in the end.
Heading and Shields led the Jr. Lady Cyclones with five points apiece in the final game of the season while Williams added four and Rylee May contributed two points in the defeat.
Despite the disappointment in the loss, T.A. Dugger finished in the top 16 girls middle school teams in the state in AAA.
