Anna Ellen Backus receives Outstanding Teacher Education Award from DKG

Anna Ellen Backus, a student at Milligan University, has received the Delta Kappa Gamma Outstanding Teacher Education Award from Milligan. She has served her Practicum and Spring Leadership at West Side Elementary School under the mentorship of Mrs. Laura Blevins and Mrs. Lauren McInturff.
Anna is from Titusville, Fla., and grew up next to the Kennedy Space Center. Watching rocket launches was a major event. Her grandfather was a physIcist and retired from NASA after working the Apollo and shuttle programs. Both of her parents are mechanical engineers, working for NASA and the United Launch Alliance. Her father is still launching rockets carrying satellites into space to explore the solar system, placing weather and GPS satellites to improve life here on earth as well as military satellites for the country’s protection.
At Milligan University, Anna is an assistant to the Track and Cross Country Team. From 2018 to 2020, she was a member of the university’s swim team and competed at the national level in 2019. During her time at Milligan she maintained a grade point average of 3.6 while being a student athlete.
Upon graduating with her Master’s Degree, she hopes to teach in a school in Northeast Tennessee.
Delta Kappa Gamma Society is a professional honorary society of women educators, which promotes professional and personal growth of its members and excellence in education.
Dr. Billye Joyce Fine, who presented the award, has been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma since 1972. While living in Florida, Dr. Fine served as president of her chapter and state officer, as well as presented workshops for the teaching organization in Florida and other states. Serving with DKG in Tennessee, since 2001, Dr. Fine has been honored with the Order of the Rose, which recognizes members for achievement and involvement at the chapter and state levels.
