“Mary Poppins,” the story of an Edwardian English family that has their world turned upside down by an all-nonsensical nanny who teaches them how to enjoy life, will come to life on stage in Watts Dance Studio’s Showcase Dancers’ adaptation during a free performance at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, on the Harold McCormick Elementary School gym stage.
Bert, a man of many professions, introduces the audience to 17 Cherry Tree Lane, where the Banks family lives: George and Winifred Banks, their two precocious children, Jane and Michael, and their house staff.
Things are not going well, for Jane and Michael are out of control and their latest nanny storms out. The children decide to write the advertisement for a new nanny (“The Perfect Nanny”).
Within moments Mary Poppins arrives and takes charge of the Banks children, having every confidence in her own qualifications and merits (“Practically Perfect”). She immediately endears herself to the children teaching them in an unconventional manner the proper way for children to behave.
Join Mary and her old chum Bert, as they work together with nonsense songs like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” as they bring the Banks family together.
Mary Poppins’ role in all this leads to some moments when it is possible to fear that all her good work will be undone, but like the magical being she is, all her “mistakes” lead to a happy result.
The second act will feature a variety of dance forms including Ballet, Jazz and Hip Hop.
Mary Poppins marks the 32nd installment in the continuing Watts Dance Studio series bringing arts into the local schools with school and community performances. It is the group’s hope that the performances raise the level of appreciation for the art of dance and musical theater.
Watts Dance Studio is home to the Showcase Dancers. They are an auditioned group of performers seen regularly throughout the area. The Showcase Dancers have performed in the Bahamas, various cruise ships, Walt Disney, and with the Moscow Ballet.
