The Lady Rangers left no doubt why they should be the number one
team in the state with an 8-0 win over Cloudland to clinch the number
one seed in the upcoming tournament.
In a game that lasted just over an hour, Unaka slowly put up runs ending
the game by winning 8-0.
Coach Matt Birchfield said, “We’ve got to hit the ball better and not leave so
many runners on base.”
The Landers left bases loaded in the first and the final inning, and a close
play at home was called out ending the game.
Karah Fields was clocked at throwing pitches at 60mph, but the
Ranger’s offense was belting the ball all over the field.
The Rangers would have added more runs but great defensive plays, one
by left-fielder Carolina Shell, who robbed an Unaka batter of a home run,
and another by Ella Benfield making a great catch to hold up Unaka runners.
Unaka’s Sadie Shoun put the Rangers on the scoreboard in the first
with a single and then scored on a hit by Kendell Bare.
In the second, Taylor Grindstaff walked, Lyndie Ramsey doubled, and then
Shoun hit her second single to add two more runs for the Rangers.
Unaka would score three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.  Shoun and
Bare went 3-for-4 for the Lady Rangers, who collected nine hits.
Cloudland had five hits by five different girls.
“We made some big plays,” said Coach Kenneth Chambers. “I thought it was
an all-around team effort.”
Cloudland will play North Greene on Thursday, while Unaka will play the
winner of the Hampton-University High game on Saturday.
