Inmate charged with false reporting

An inmate in the Washington County Detention Center has been charged with False Reporting.
According to Sheriff Keith Sexton, Dustin Garland, 31 of Watauga, filed a Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) complaint on July 4, 2022. A report for forcible fondling was filed during the same day.
During an investigation by deputies, Garland admitted to providing false statements and fabricating the PREA claim. This led to the false reporting charge, which resulted in an additional $2,500 bond to his previous charge of violation of probation. His next court appearance is Sept. 19.
