• Saturday, August 6
Preston Benfield will be performing at the Roan Mountain Summer Concert Series from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Anderson Community Park (behind the post office) in Roan Mountain. Roan Mountain is going “Country on the Roan” and nobody does country better than Preston, one of the top musicians in this area with a great blend of your favorite covers and some of Preston’s heartfelt originals. We’re havin’ a hoedown and you’re invited. Dust off that cowboy hat, pack a picnic, spread a blanket or bring a lawnchair, and come on up and enjoy an evening on the Roan.
The descendants of Emmert Doc and Wilda Deloach will be having their annual reunion at the Laurels picnic area, pavilion #1. Lunch will be served around noon. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish. For more information call Tony Deloach, 423-677-1202, or Gaye Loveless, 423-213-9534.
A Fish and Chicken Fry will be held at 4 p.m. at Boozy Creek Community Center, 1989 Shelleys Road, Bristol, Va. In addition to fish and chicken, the meal will include lots of fantastic sides, a large variety of desserts, and drinks. A gardening seminar series will be held at Sycamore Shoals State Park in Elizabethton from 9 a.m. until noon in the Community Room. The seminar will be presented by Master Gardener, Ben Hunter. Discussions will include: Review of Summer Gardens — What went right and what went wrong; Plant a fall garden — Any kind of vegetable is better than weeds; and Pruning of blackberries, blueberries, fruit trees and renovation of strawberries. The event is sponsored by N.E. Tennessee Master Gardeners and Sycamore Shoals State Park and is free to the public. For more information, call (423) 543-5808.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) will meet at First Baptist Church, 212 East F St., Elizabethton. Weigh-in begins at 5:30-6:30 p.m. with the meeting starting at 6:45 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings. The Smith, Price, White Family Reunion will be held at the Hampton Christian Church Fellowship Hall at 810 Deerfield Lane, Hampton. It will start at noon and go on until 4 p.m. We will eat at 1 p.m. Please bring a covered dish and dessert. Please bring a gift for bingo. We will also play horseshoes and award trophies for 1st and 2nd place. • Saturday, August 20
According to State-Certified Instructor Ken Potter, a state-certified non-lethal weapons class will be taught starting at 8:30 a.m. The class will be held at 135 Keenburg Road in Elizabethton and will cover chemical spray, expandable baton, handcuffing, and taser. Applicants may take all programs or choose the ones they want. Potter said this course will cover training for security officers to carry these non-lethal weapons. Church groups may attend to obtain certificates of completion. All applicants must be 18 years of age or older to attend.
