To the Editor:
How refreshing to read an intelligent letter to the editor like Teresa Young wrote to the STAR this past weekend about climate change. She hit the nail on the head. And, she did not even quote any talk show hosts or call anyone evil like some recent writers. I think one contributor suggested not teaching climate change in our schools. Typical Fox news, talk show influences.
I was an earth science teacher beginning in 1969 and was teaching the dangers of fossil fuels and the damage that would occur then. We have known the dangers for decades, yet Big Oil, Big Coal have prevailed. Politics and money. Now, we are seeing the effects of global warming, years before predicted. Droughts, flooding, glacial melting, wild fires, sea level rising, extreme heat, hurricanes. And you want to talk about migration, we haven’t seen anything yet from millions fleeing from droughts and/or flooding.
And, I certainly agree with Ms. Young that the media has an obligation about printing the truth. With some letters it is hard to distinguish the fact from fiction.
Maybe the STAR would benefit from a disclaimer such as most papers bring, “all columns printed in the pages of the letter writers are the opinions of the writer and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the newspaper.”
