On Friday, Happy Valley High School officially welcomed Shane Williams as the head boys basketball coach.
Williams has experience on every level of the court, including breaking records playing at the University of Tennessee from 1994-1996. A graduate of Science Hill High School and a Johnson City native, Williams has a strong connection to his community and wants to be the best influence possible for his new team.
“Dr. Blair gave me a vision and the opportunity and it was just too good to pass up. I couldn’t pass it up,” Williams said. He is optimistic about the future of the Happy Valley Warriors and is confident in his ability to train and push players to their fullest potential.
“[I’m looking forward to] the process of the season — just to see the kids’ growth. I want to see the kids go from here to another level and then keep on going,” Williams said, adding that athletes who stick to his program are going to benefit on and off the court. “I want my guys to get the best jobs first, the interviews, have great families, and take care of their community.”
Williams expresses his gratitude for his new position and his excitement to get started. He’ll be overseeing kids at Happy Valley Elementary and Happy Valley Middle as well, hoping to influence a generation of young players by trusting the process.
“I can motivate and get every ounce of goodness out of kids. They have the potential. I’m really good at getting people to do what they think they can’t do,” he said.
Matt Estep, Athletic Director at Happy Valley High School, said the Warrior community is excited about Williams joining the staff. “You can tell from the response of the crowd there’s a lot of excitement here on Warrior Hill. We’re really looking forward to having him come join our community. He’s got experience at all levels from being on those great teams at Science Hill with Coach Pitts to playing at the University of Tennessee. He’s got college and high school coaching experience and you can’t beat it,” he said.
