ELIZABETHTON — 1 Corinthians 2:9: “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”
John Albert Stines, 82, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday morning, August 14, 2022, surrounded by his precious wife and children.
He was born on September 9, 1939 to Julia Alma and Reverend Charles Hill Stines. John had lived in the Elizabethton and Johnson City area his entire life.
John’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. He treasured and took great care of his “green-eyed” girl who became his bride. They were married for 62 years.
He lovingly referred to his children as “angels” and always led by example in his faith and service to the Lord. Anyone that spent time with him would know that Jesus was truly John’s best friend and he was always eager to share his faith. John was a humble man who spent hours in daily Bible study and prayer. He was a dedicated prayer warrior.
John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, provider, mentor and friend. He had a contagious smile and a compliment for everyone.
He was a simple man and found enjoyment in simple things, such as: Flower gardening, bird watching, eating Breyers vanilla ice cream, Popcorn, Sunday dinners with his family, old movies, and Pal’s French Fries.
He also authored several journals and books and personalized them for his wife and children. He recorded a wealth of his family history and life stories as a priceless gift to each of them. He was patiently longing to see his mother and family again in Heaven.
John had a wonderful work-ethic and worked until he was 77. He was certified as a millwright. His employment history included management and retail with Dave’s Oil Company and Howard’s Shop EZ, as a skilled worker with North American Rayon and most recently worked at Ivy Hall Nursing Home (maintenance). On many occasions, he mentioned that working at Ivy Hall (for Judy and Victor) was the best job he ever had. He loved visiting with the residents and spent hours talking with them and praying for them during his prayer time.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Julia Alma Tester Stines and Charles Hill Stines, and eight brothers and sisters, Grady Stines, Charlie Stines, James Stines, Luke Stines, David Stines, Alice Chase, Esther Richardson and Naomi Carroll.
John is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Novella P. Berry Stines, and his children (spouses), Sherry (Mike) Wallace of Johnson City, Brenda (Allen) Frost of Johnson City, Donna (Anthony “Tut”) Malone of Myrtle Beach, Sonja (Marvohn) Hastings of Greeneville, and his son, Terry (Misty) Stines of Gatlinburg. He was also a proud grandfather of Amanda Wallace, Katie Wallace, Audrea J. Bulla Carroll, John D. Bulla (Hollie), Wesley Malone (Lauren), Amelia Malone Brewer (Wesley), Casey Malone, Jessica House Gillespie (Broderick), Riley House, Callie Stines and Carlie Stines.
Also left to cherish his memory is his brother-in-law, James (Samantha) Berry, and sister-in-law, Carmie (Mike) Lowe, and many special neighbors and friends.
In addition, he delighted in several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
John was a praying member of Westerly Heights Baptist Church in Johnson City.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Scott May and Staff as well as Jennifer and Megan with Amedisys Hospice, for their amazing compassion and care.
