Hampton’s defense was stellar on Friday night as the Bulldogs held Cloudland to 109 yards of total offense and had two interceptions in a 38-6 nonconference win at J.C. Campbell Stadium.
“The defense played well, but for us to be the team we want to be, you can’t have penalties, that set you back from the two-yard line to the six,” Bulldogs head coach Michael Lunsford said. “We have to control our emotions and have mishap after mishap. Dylan (Trivett) is a very good weapon a very elite weapon. He does a good job controlling the offense and he is getting back to where he was early on.”
Hampton’s first possession ended with a punt that put Cloudland at their own five-yard line. The Highlanders moved the ball to the 18-yard line but on fourth down were forced to punt and the snap sailed over the head of the punter and out of the end zone for a safety.
Cloudland (1-3 overall) had a free kick and Hampton took over at the ‘Landers 44-yard line. The Bulldogs went on a 10-play drive for a touchdown when junior quarterback Dylan Trivett took the ball in from the two-yard line for a 10-0 advantage after Levi Lunsford ran in the deuce.
In the second period, Lunsford capped a 59-yard drive with a one-yard run but the two-pointer failed and the ‘Dogs took a 16-0 lead. Trivett rushed for 74 yards in the first half on 10 carries and completed 3-of-11 passes for 30 yards.
Cloudland struggled offensively, rushing for 19 yards on seven tries with sophomore quarterback Camden Peppers completing 3-of-5 passes for 13 yards.
In the second half, Dominque Burleson took the kickoff back 81 yards for the touchdown that extended the ‘Dogs lead to 24-0. The ‘Landers answered with a nine-play 79-yard drive after a long kickoff return by Gage McKinney was brought back on a penalty.
Undaunted the ‘Landers got on the scoreboard with a two-yard run from Peppers. The two-pointer was no good however.
In the fourth quarter the ‘Dogs drove 66 yards on eight plays with Lunsford diving in from the two and he also ran in the deuce for a 32-6 Hampton lead. Late in the game Jonathan Greenwell intercepted Peppers and raced 30 yards to paydirt and a 38-6 final score.
“Greenwell has played as well as anyone,” Lunsford said. “We use him all over the field, offense, defense and special teams. We need to clean up some things like the penalties. You won’t beat good teams having a lot of penalties.”
