Lady Cyclones blank Volunteer

The Elizabethton Lady Cyclones soccer program is making a smooth transition from long-time head coach Bill McClay to Lauren Meier and on Tuesday night they made huge strides in a 4-nil shutout victory over Volunteer in a conference match at Citizens Bank Stadium.
“They did well,” Meier said. “They came out and led us on a few things that we worked on in practice the last couple weeks leading up to this game and they came out tonight and executed. We are coming together and making combination passes and it helps their confidence. We have a good group of girls and we are starting to come together and play as a team.”
Junior Shayla Orellana got EHS on the scoreboard in the sixth minute blasting a shot past Lady Falcons goalkeeper Elana Horne. On the play, the ball drifted across the penalty area and Orellana pounced on it sending a high shot over Horne to give the Lady Cyclones a one-goal advantage.
Freshman Izzy Lewis put on a clinic of ball handling, dribbling and shooting crossing passes and had a pair of assists in the match.
“She knows what she is doing and has great potential,” Meier said of Lewis. “She can really play those crosses and she has a lot of talent. We encourage her to be a little more selfish and take shots when they present themselves. We tell all the girls to be aggressive and take a shot if it is there.”
Lewis’s first assist came on a free kick from 25 yards out that she sent on goal and Horne could not field it cleanly and the rebound came to Camdyn Garland and her shot made it a 2-nil contest. In the 36th minute Hallie Powell scored off a pass from Mollie Johnson and the Cyclones went into the halftime break with a 3-nil lead.
EHS (4-5-1 overall, 2-1 conference) had a clean score sheet in the first half having not surrendered a shot on goal and held the Falcons to just two shots on goal for the match, neither particularly dangerous as senior goalkeeper Morgan Heaton communicated well with her back line.
Lewis’s second assist came in the 42nd minute as she sent a high shot at Volunteer’s second goalkeeper Bre Dykes that she couldn’t handle and Johnson nudged the ball across the line and into the net.
In the latter stages things got a little chippy, but not in a fighting way just more physical play as Savannah Smith and Bailey Oakes each were shown yellow cards for the Cyclones and Terrilynn Calhoun received one for Volunteer.
“We had a couple of yellow cards and you will see that in a physical match,” Meier said. “Nothing malicious that I could tell, just a good physical game.”
