The FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar 2022, the country’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has announced.
“I am very proud to announce that Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup in 2022,” the Emir said at a ceremony in Zurich, where the 2022 World Cup was officially awarded to Qatar.
“This is a historic moment for our country and our people, and we are determined to make sure that we deliver on the promises that we have made.”
Qatar beat out bids from Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States to win the right to host the world’s biggest sporting event.
What is special about FIFA World Cup 2022?
The FIFA World Cup is an international football tournament contested by the men’s national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament is held every four years, and it is the most widely-viewed and followed sporting event in the world.
What makes the FIFA World Cup 2022 unique is that it will be held in Qatar, making it the first World Cup to be held in the Middle East. Additionally, the tournament will be held from 20 November to 18 December 2022 due to the extreme heat in Qatar during that time of year. This is also the first time that a World Cup will not be held in its usual June-July timeframe.
What is the format of the FIFA World Cup 2022?
The format of the FIFA World Cup 2022 will follow along the lines of recent editions, with a 32-team group stage to whittle the field down to 16 teams — only the top two teams from each of the eight groups survive.
Those 16 teams will advance to the single-game knockout stages where the winner moves on and the loser goes home. There must be a winner on the day for every knockout-round match, and extra time and penalty kicks will be used, if necessary, to determine the victor.
How many teams are participating in the FIFA World Cup 2022?
There are a total of 32 teams participating in the FIFA World Cup 2022. All 32 teams have officially qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, including the host nation. The final two spots were filled by the intercontinental playoff winners on June 13 and June 14.
When it comes to particular teams to look out for, Brazil and Germany are always contenders, while host nation Qatar will be hoping to make an impact.
