Hampton let one slip away on Thursday as Daniel Boone scored 21 second-half points to defeat the Bulldogs 21-20 on Senior Night. Boone finished with an unbeaten 10-0 regular season record for the first time in school history.

The first half was dominated by Hampton (8-2 overall) as the Bulldogs ran 46 plays to the Trailblazers nine plays. Hampton had 200 yards of total offense to 22 for Daniel Boone. Senior RB Levi Lunsford rushed for 100 first-half yards and two touchdowns and a two-point conversion as the ‘Dogs took a 14-0 advantage.

Junior QB Dylan Trivett was two for six passing for 52 yards. Hampton opened the contest with a 13-play, 80-yard drive capped by a two-yard Lunsford run. He also ran in the deuce for an 8-0 Bulldogs lead.

After an interception by Johnathan Greenwell, the ‘Dogs drove to the Boone four-yard line on 15 plays before turning the ball over on downs. Boone did not fare well on the next possession and was forced to punt.

From the 49-yard line, the ‘Dogs drove 51 yards on ten plays with Lunsford plunging in from the one-yard line for a 14-0 Bulldogs advantage. The two-point pass was incomplete. Boone was held to just 33 yards of total offense in the first half.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the effort of these kids,” Bulldogs head coach Michael Lunsford said. “If we make the two-point conversion we beat them. We really leaned on Levi tonight. He’s probably the toughest kid I ever coached.”

Lunsford ran the ball 44 times for 211 yards and three touchdowns, with one two-point conversion run.

“We gave a whole lot of effort,” Levi Lunsford said. “We were outmatched size-wise, maybe skill-wise, but the guys made holes. I feel great about our effort. No one thought we could play with a 5A school.”

Boone opened the second half putting the onus on junior QB Luke Jenkins to forge the comeback and he did just that. Jenkins passed for 184 yards with 162 yards coming in the second half. The Blazers got on the board in the third quarter when Jenkins found senior TE Jake Davenport on a 13-yard scoring strike and Ben Shrewsbury knocked through the point after kick to cut the ‘Dogs lead to 14-7.

Hampton – as they had done all night – went on a long drive that ended on downs at the Boone 24-yard line after a sack on Trivett by Luke Scott. The Blazers then went 65 yards on 11 plays with Jenkins diving in from the one-yard line. Shrewsbury tied the game with his 38^th consecutive PAT.

Lunsford capped an 80-yard drive for Hampton with a 3-yard run but Trivett’s two-point pass fell incomplete and Hampton had to settle for a 20-14 lead with 2:27 left in regulation.

Boone took over at the 41-yard line and on the second play, Jenkins found Landon Kirkpatrick behind the Hampton secondary and his pass was perfect, hitting Kirkpatrick in stride and Shrewsbury connected on his 39^th PAT of the season to give the Blazers a 21-20 lead with 1:54 remaining.

Shrewsbury’s touchback gave Hampton possession at the 20-yard line but Trivett was sacked on three straight pass play’s to end it.

“We came back and took the lead and we thought we had it,” Lunsford said. “Boone is a good football team and you got to give them all the credit in the world.”
