The lights on the Fraser fir are being checked in anticipation of the annual lighting, which will be held this year on Nov. 19. The annual lighting of the Fraser fir is a community event to ring in the holiday season. The tree is located at the historic Folsom House (UT Extension Office) in downtown Elizabethton. The tree and the Folsom House just behind have a significant history. The two-story clapboard house was owned by Major H. M. Folsom. The story goes that in the late 1860s the Folsom family went to Roan Mountain and brought home Fraser fir Saplings. These saplings were planted on each side of the home and the 78-foot tree standing today is the largest Fraser fir in the State of Tennessee and second largest in the Nation. It is the tallest decorated Fraser fir in the world! The tree lighting ceremony will begin at 5 p.m.
