If Hampton’s boys basketball squad keeps scoring like it has in the last two games, the administration may have to purchase a new scoreboard. One that allows for triple figures.
For the second consecutive home game the Bulldog boys put up 98 points and pummeled the West Greene Buffaloes 98-70 on Thursday night at Van Huss/White Gymnasium.
Cadon Buckles scored 39 points and Michael Anspaugh and Dylan Trivett each had six assists as the ‘Dogs dominated the second half. In the first half West Greene closed to within two points at 37-35 but the ‘Dogs turned up the defensive pressure and went on to close the half with a 59-48 advantage.
“West Greene has a good team,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “Turner shoots the ball well and he is hard to keep off the boards. He is strong, physical and the team is well coached. Once we settled down we played solid, blocked out well and Geno Carrico gave us a lift in the second half. He led us in rebounds.”
Hampton usually plays strong to open the second half of games and this was no different as the ‘Dogs outscored the Buffs 24-11 to open an 83-59 lead going into the final stanza. Junior post Hayden Campbell and Anspaugh each scored 12 points to back Buckles output and Carrico added 10 points.
For West Greene, Ethan Turner scored a team high 24 points with post Austin Wampler scoring 15 and guard Layton Frye adding 12 points before fouling out in the late stages of the third period.
GIRLS
Macy Henry scored a game high 20 points as the Lady Bulldogs took an easy win over West Greene. The ‘Dogs took a 25-15 halftime lead while holding the Lady Buffs to single digit scoring in each quarter until the fourth period.
“Macy played well,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Brandon Carpenter said. “Even when she doesn’t have a great game she contributes. It took us a while to get going, and right now I have a six player rotation going. As the season moves forward I will expand that and get more kids involved. These kids like playing with each other. It is a good group of kids.”
Hampton (2-0 overall) took control of the game in the third period – outscoring the Buffs 26-9 in the period – and took a 51-24 advantage into the fourth quarter. Madison McClain scored 14 points for Hampton with post Taylor Berry adding 10 points.
For West Greene post Kinsey Ellenburg scored a team high 14 points.
