The Unaka Rangers fell behind by 12 points in the first quarter and were able to make up just one of those points in falling to South Greene 57-46 on Thursday night at Snavely gymnasium. On the girls side, a 33-point third period propelled the Lady Rebels to a 79-53 win over the Lady Rangers.
The Rebels (6-7 overall) took a 16-4 first-quarter lead as the Rangers (1-11 overall) were able to hit just 1-for-8 from the floor with a pair of free throws.
“As bad as we talked about, in the third quarter we were down just six,” Rangers head coach Aaron Dugger said. “We got a lot of work to do, and when league play starts, our team will keep the attitude that we tested them hard early on. In the meantime, we’ll try to find some wins and continue to test them.”
The Rangers rebounded well with Joe-Z Blamo and Brayden Powell with six each and Marcus Shomaker with five but putbacks were rushed and Unaka shot 6-for-21 (28.5 percent) in the first half as South Greene took a 25-17 halftime lead.
The Rebels came on in the third period outscoring the Rangers 20-11 to move into the final stanza with a 45-28 advantage. In the period Unaka trailed 38-28 only to see the Rebels finish the period with a seven-point run.
Unaka had 22 turnovers in the contest and Dugger commented that “You can’t turn the ball over against a good team. That is something we have struggled with and need to get fixed.”
The Rangers shaved six points off the Rebels lead in the fourth period but it was too little, too late to prevent the final margin. Cooper Kelley had a game-high 15 points for South Greene while Blamo led the Rangers scoring ledger with 13 and Shomaker added 12.
The Rangers will compete against Coalfield to open the Harriman Christmas tournament on December 29.

Kortnei Bailey scored a team-high 25 points while guard Haley Brooks added 24 but neither could match Unaka senior guard Lyndie Ramsey who scored a game-high 35 points with 13 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Ramsey had 19 points at the half as the Lady Rangers matched South Greene (9-4 overall) point for point in the first half. The Lady Rebels shot 12-for-18 (66.7 percent) in the third period with Brooks scoring 14 third-quarter points.
