UETHDA announces energy assistance outreach for January

The Upper East Tennessee Human Development Agency was throughout the region in December helping those needing assistance with their energy bills. They will again be making calls in January.

LIHEAP stands for Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. This program helps keep individuals and families safe and healthy through initiatives that assist with energy costs. For those who qualify, a payment is sent directly to the recipient’s utility company and is credited to their bill. Payments can take up to 90 days to be applied. Priority is given to the low-income, energy burdened, disabled, elderly, homes with young children under 6, veterans, and large households. Last year, UETHDA provided LIHEAP funding to 11,730 households, totaling more than 5.7 million dollars.

Among the locations the UETHDA will be at in January are:

— Tuesday, Jan. 10, 8:30 a.m., Elizabethton, Second Harvest, Carter Christian, Highway 91

— Tuesday, Jan. 10, 10:30 a.m., Elizabethton, Second Harvest, South Hills (EHA), 301 South Hills Drive

— Wednesday, Jan. 11, 8:30 a.m., Elizabethton, Second Harvest, Valley Forge Free Will, 1503 Riverview Drive

— Wednesday, Jan. 11, 10:30 a.m., Watauga, Second Harvest, Sunflower Lane (close to the Rock Quarry)

— Friday, Jan. 13, 11:30 a.m., Roan Mountain, Second Harvest, Sunset Free Will Baptist, 6676 Highway 193

— Friday, Jan. 13, 1:30 p.m., Elizabethton, Second Harvest, Elizabethton VFW, 2001 W. Elk Ave.

Those in need may also visit one of the UETHDA nine area neighborhood service centers, located in the eight-county area for aid, or simply call the office at (423) 426-6180. LIHEAP is only one of many services offered to help with self-sufficiency.
