Nineteen of the smallest teams in the region were represented in The Little’s Meet hosted by the Virginia High School Bearcats at the Kingsport Aquatic Center on Saturday. The Cyclones boys and girls each came out on top with the girls winning by a margin of just three points over the Galax Maroon Tide of Virginia.
The boys relay team of Kody Broussard, Liam Cannon, RJ Brewer, and Morgan Roszel won both the 200 Medley and 200 Freestyle relays. Each relay member went on to win in their individual events as well. Broussard topped the field in the 100 Backstroke, Cannon in the 100 Breaststroke, Brewer took the win in the 100 Butterfly as he qualified for State in the event, and Roszel won both the 200 and 500 Freestyles. The other members of the boys’ team, John Odom and Jacob Frickel, swam personal best times in their individual events, adding to the points total in the team’s winning effort.
Junior Cadie Digby took the win in each of her events, the 50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly, both events that she has to choose from to compete in at the State meet next month. Teammate Grace Artz swam personal best times in each of her events, the 200 and 500 Freestyle, breaking through the seven-minute mark in the latter event for her first time. Freshman Cara Carr also broke through a milestone as she dropped below the 1:10 barrier in the 100 Freestyle for her first time, placing eighth. Fellow Freshman Jasey Hyatt improved in her 100 Backstroke by dropping 1.16 seconds. Junior Layla El Helou showed off the season’s training when she improved in the 100 Butterfly by a jaw-dropping 31.53 seconds and shaved another 1.02 seconds in her 50 Freestyle for two personal best times. Team Captain Sophia James also improved by a significant margin in the 50 Freestyle, dropping 3.50 seconds in the shortest event of the day. Teammate Tori Frakes also swam personal best times in the 50 and 100 Freestyle, improving by 5.29 and 1.12 seconds, respectively. In the last individual event of the day, Mia Whaley improved upon her best time in the 100 Breaststroke to place fourth with a 1:23.72 in the event.
The Cyclones compete in their last regular season meet against Dobyns-Bennett, Sullivan East and Westridge Tuesday evening at the Kingsport Aquatic Center. The meet starts at 5:30 pm. Admission is $6 and the public is welcome.
