Milligan will recognize nine local leaders during the university’s 21st annual Leaders in Christian Service program on Jan. 12. The ceremony’s speaker will be David Beamer, father of 9/11 hero Todd Beamer whose famous words, “Let’s roll,” on United Flight 93 became a symbol of American heroism. The ceremony’s student honorees will be recognized in Todd Beamer’s memory.
The 2023 Leaders in Christian Service honorees include the following Johnson City residents: Lois Greenwell, retired office manager for Blackburn, Childers & Steagall, CPAs; Jill Hughes, nurse practitioner for Ballad Health; Jeff Lucas, architect; and Angie Phipps, travel agent. Other honorees include Lilo Duncan, of Elizabethton, a retired educator; Dr. Wes Hanson, of Roan Mountain, chief medical officer of Rural Health Services Consortium; and Carmella Price, of Elizabethton, retired president of Security Federal Bank of Elizabethton.
The Todd Beamer Student Leaders in Christian Service honorees include Loren Hensley, of Piney Flats, a senior at Sullivan East High School, and Madeline Manear, of Baltimore, Md., a senior at Milligan University.
Milligan introduced the Leaders in Christian Service program in 2001 to identify examples of individuals from all walks of life who advance the cause of Christ through their character, professional and vocational leadership, and church and community involvement.
