Hampton sweeps past Happy Valley

In a dominating display of defensive and offensive excellence, the Hampton Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs each took an easy victory over Happy Valley on Tuesday evening at Van Huss/White Gymnasium.
The girls – with four players in double figures – took a 75-34 decision while the boys scored a 78-29 win behind 28 points from senior Cadon Buckles, who also scored his 1,000 career point in the contest.
“I always work hard, but I give a lot of it to my coaches and my teammates,” Buckles said. “I have a great support system around me and they just push me every day to be the best I can be and I thank them for it.”
The Bulldogs (15-5 overall) jumped out to a 29-12 first-period lead by forcing 13 first-period turnovers. Junior post Hayden Campbell had ten first-period points while Buckles added nine and the ‘Dogs were able to run away early.
Hampton built its lead to 58-20 by halftime and never looked back as the defensive effort saw the ‘Dogs hold the Warriors to single-digit scoring in the next three quarters, including holding Happy Valley (2-17 overall) to just two points in the third period.
“Ball pressure was key,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “The kids stayed after it and we played really good together. We had 19 assists and 19 steals. We shared the ball well and that was another big key for us.”
11 of the 13 players that saw minutes on the court scored with Campbell scoring ten and Geno Carrico adding six.
“We have a lot of playmakers on this team and coach loves for us to push the pace,” Buckles said. “We always look for each other in transition and we stay aggressive.”

Macy Henry led the way for the Lady Bulldogs (18-0 overall) with 16 points as the squad remained unbeaten in the 2022-23 season. Senior point guard Madison McClain and sophomore Piper Helle each had 15 points and senior Linsey Jenkins added 13 points and seven rebounds.
“The last couple of games we have been a step slow,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Brandon Carpenter said. “It seemed like tonight we got that step back on defense. Our rotation was real good, we shared the ball real well and that’s what we want to be. We are on a steady level and I have some great assistant coaches.”
The Lady ‘Dogs held HV (4-11 overall) to single-digit scoring in each of the first three periods to build a 66-21 lead going into the fourth quarter when Carpenter emptied his bench.
Kadie Bailey led the way for the Lady Warriors with a game-high 18 points, with Marcida Moore adding ten points.
