Roan Mountain State Park hosts No Flat Trails hiking marathon

Roan Mountain State Park will host a hiking marathon March 18-April 16. Participants will have roughly 30 days to complete the marathon or one-half marathon of their choosing. The marathon is a self-paced, self-guided, honor system hike. Registration is required, and the cost is $35.
The fee covers a T-shirt, Niagene water bottle, and a lunch celebration Sunday, April 16, at 1 p.m. at the park conference center. Participants will pick up their swap bag on April 16 after completing the hiking marathon and turning in their trail log sheet that is provided.
Registration closes on March 10, and participants will begin their marathon March 18.
Pets are welcome, but must be kept on a leash. All canines that participate will receive a bandana March 16. You are asked to clean up after your furry friend along the way.
Marathon park trails include: Peg Leg Loop, .35 miles; Forest Road, 2.75 miles (one way); Chestnut Ridge, 1.95 (one way); Moonshiners Run, .95 miles (one-way); Turkey Trot, .25 miles (one-way); Blue 2, 1.35 miles; Tom Gray, .4 miles; Fred Behrend, 2.35 miles; and Riverside, .5 miles (one way).
Optional trails within the surrounding area to round out the mileage include Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area, Birchfield Trail, .95 miles; Shell Hollow Trail, .85 miles; Overmountain Victory Trail, 7 miles out and back; Nat’l Forest Service Property, Carver’s Gap to 19E, 14.8 miles (one way); Carver’s Gap to Grassy Ridge, 5 miles; and Carver’s Gap to Hampton Creek Cove, 8.2 miles.
