Jesse M. Lingerfelt, 81, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at his home. Jesse was born in Carter County to the late David and Eunice (Asher) Lingerfelt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Lingerfelt.
Jesse was a 1962 graduate of Elizabethton High School, where he had played football, basketball and softball. Jesse retired from the United States Army. He was a loyal and devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church of Elizabethton and enjoyed playing for the church league’s fast pitch softball. Jesse enjoyed bowling, UT football and anything to do with the University of Tennessee sports. Above all, Jesse was a family man and loved his family, and they in turn loved him dearly.
Those left to remember and cherish Jesse include his wife, Nell Lingerfelt, of the home; five brothers, Randy Lingerfelt, Denver Asher, David “Dag” Lingerfelt and Landon Lingerfelt, all of Elizabethton, and Fred Baker Lingerfelt of Johnson City; and four sisters, Peggy Palmer and Valerie Scalf, both of Elizabethton, Gale (Wally) Reyes of Des Moines, Iowa, and Janie Richardson of Johnson City. Several nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate Jesse’s life was conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 9, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section) with Dr. James Richardson officiating. Active pallbearers were Cody Palmer, Jay Estep, Chad Floyd, Andy Guinn, Joe Estep and Andy Guinn Jr. Those attending the service were asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Thursday. The family wishes to express a special thank you to Sue Estep for her care and compassion to Jesse and the family during his illness.
