JOHNSON CITY – The East Tennessee State University College of Nursing has announced the inaugural Pattie Lathan Browder Lecture to be held on Tuesday, March 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in ETSU’s Martin Center for the Arts, Powell Recital Hall.
Dr. Patricia V. Burkhart will present the lecture titled “Nurses Live Their Stories as Caring, Competent Professionals.”
Burkhart is a pediatric nurse with a research doctorate in parent-child nursing and 45 years of nursing experience in pediatric clinical practice, teaching and research. She is professor emerita and associate dean emerita of undergraduate faculty affairs and interprofessional education in the College of Nursing at the University of Kentucky. While at UK, she created an innovative undergraduate nursing research internship that was nationally recognized with the Innovations in Professional Nursing Education Award from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
The lectureship endowment recognizes the legacy of local nurse Pattie L. Browder, who passed away on March 14, 2022.
Browder made an impact on the lives of hundreds of patients as a nurse in a number of settings, such as pediatric oncology, the intensive care unit and elementary school nursing. Her personal life also was shaped by her career as a nurse, as her professional expertise and instincts helped diagnose her daughter’s medical condition and save her life.
“Ms. Browder was committed to nursing principles in every aspect of her life, and the ETSU College of Nursing intends to carry on her legacy through this lectureship, which is focused on the impact of nursing on all aspects of a nurse’s own life,” said Dr. Leann Horsley, dean of the College of Nursing.
