Head coach Doug Phillips built one of the greatest runs in Carter County girls’ basketball history that would not be matched until Len Dugger’s Lady Cyclones run from 2011-2016.  Phillips 1997-98 Dogs were the first Hampton girl’s team to make a state tournament.  They would compile a 25-6 record, losing the opening round of the state finals.  South Greene had pretty much ruled girl’s basketball as well as Unicoi.
As many teams did in 1998-99, the Lady Bulldogs fell victim to a sectional that the TSSAA had on a trial basis.  A complete failure that sent North Greene girls to the State that Hampton had badly beaten three times. North Greene lost to Bradford in Murfreesboro, 83-32.
When  Phillips girls became Juniors, they became more of age, defeating both teams and returning to the big show.  They finished off the season with a 29-4 record. Hampton would set the school record for wins in 2001 and a third trip to the big show for Phillips, recording a 31-3 record.   From that team, Kelly Shoun went to Virginia Intermont. Alice Peters, who was selected MVP all four seasons, went to Lees McRae.  Rachel Clawson, Miranda and Amanda Greene, along with Jenny White, all played for Milligan College.  Amber Farmer played at King College.
Cyndie Troutman played in those years and played at Walter State, then Coastal Carolina and graduated from Hampton in 2000.  Kari Stout was a starter on the record setting team and went on to play for Milligan.  Also on the 2001 team was Amber Farmer, Allison Pierce, Amanda Finney, Cindy Hyatt, Lyndsie Hill and Jamie Timbs.
This year Hampton Bulldogs tied that record of most school wins of 31 with a first round TSSAA state tournament win. A win on Friday would not only break the record but would send the Lady Dogs to the state title game.  Hampton plays at 1:15 Friday afternoon.
