The bill to add “In God We Trust” onto the Tennessee seal this week passed the Senate unanimously. Sponsored by State Senator Rusty Crowe (R-Johnson City) and Representative John Holsclaw (R-Elizabethton), Senate Bill 420 asks Governor Lee to add “In God We Trust” to the current Tennessee state seal.
Crowe said: “The governor is the keeper of the seal. This bill would ask our governor to direct the secretary of state to redesign our state seal, which would then require the Senate and House to pass a resolution to approve the new design, which for the first time would place together Tennessee’s state motto of ‘Commerce and Agriculture’ with our nation’s model ‘In God We Trust.’”
“I am very proud both Republicans and Democrats voted to include our nation’s motto on our state seal,” Crowe continued. “This bill brings together our state motto of ‘Commerce and Agriculture’ with our nation’s motto ‘In God We Trust’ under one beautiful seal. It also proudly brings together both sides of the aisle as Democrats and Republicans alike voted unanimously to approve of this legislation.”
In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law “In God We Trust” as the nation’s official motto and mandated that it be printed on all American currency; denoting the economic and political prosperity of our nation is in God’s hands. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives and if passed there, onto our governor.
