Certain teams you can get by with having a couple of errors against; Dobyns-Bennett is not one of those teams. Even though the Cyclones outhit the Indians defensive issues turned a close game into a 9-1 Indians advantage. After a DB single, the Indians pushed their lead to 3-0 after three innings; Cyclone senior Jonah Hubbard was able to induce a ground ball to get the Cyclones out of the inning. The top of the fourth started with promise as Briley Hurley laced a single past the Indians shortstop to kick things off but a couple of hard ground balls couldn’t find grass and the Indians were able to get out of the inning. The Indians got two more runs in the top of the fifth off a couple of hits and a sac fly. The Cyclones would strand runners at second and third after a called strike three on Bryson Rowland.
DB scored four in the sixth off a couple of base hits and two errors, pushing the score to 9-0; the Cyclones would get on the board when Briley Hurley scamper home off a ground ball to make the score 9-1. Cyclones pitchers Bryson Rowland, Jonah Hubbard and Steven Meadows would only surrender two earned runs on the day but would also issue seven walks. Elizabethton would outhit DB 5-4, with Hurley picking up two hits. Rowland, Rhett Slagle and Peyton Johnson would also finish the day with base hits.
EHS Head Baseball Coach Ryan Presnell talked after this game, “our record is a little misleading right now, there are little areas that we can improve on. We are not far away from being a really good ball team but we have to be able to execute in key moments.” The Cyclones Baseball team will travel to Nashville over spring break to play in the Viking Classic Tournament in South Nashville featuring 50 teams from around the US.
