Wilburn Kenneth Mills, born June 21, 1937 in Waynesville, N.C., passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home on Saturday, April 8, 2023. Wilburn dedicated his life to his family, his community, and his work as a skilled Textile Mill employee. Wilburn settled in Elizabethton in 1982 when he married Laura Simerly.

Those who knew Wilburn will remember him as a man who was never short on jokes, a testament to his witty and humorous nature. He had a sweet and sincere side and was known for his unwavering love and dedication to his family. His warmth and love for life made a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Wilburn spent his retirement years traveling the country and his weekends at Watauga Lake with his dearest friends. Whether casting a line or hitting the open road, Wilburn was happiest when he was sharing his passions with those he held dear.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Mills, and his loving daughter, Tracy Mills Baxley; four granddaughters, Ferrin Mills, Whitney Baxley, Kasey Baxley and Kori Williamson; and three great-granddaughters, Samyiah, Santana and Shaelynn.

Wilburn’s family will continue to honor his memory and values. His loss will be deeply felt by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him and his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.

A committal service to honor Wilburn’s life will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 16, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with family saying a prayer.
