Phyllis I Meece, 96, of Johnson City, died Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Princeton Transitional Care Center following a brief illness.
Phyllis was born in Decatur, Ill., on February 7, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Warren and Mary Peters Hubbard.
Phyllis was an active member of the Elizabethton First United Methodist Church where she rarely ever missed a Sunday morning worship service. Everyone who ever met Phyllis found her to be a fun and interesting person with lots of great stories to share. At church she was known as the “Hat Lady” because she always wore very attractive large hats. She loved to read the scriptures during the worship service and did an excellent job with her readings.
Phyllis was an avid golfer and had made three hole-in-ones during her lifetime, something most golfers never do. The Elizabethton Women’s Golf Association members were always appreciative of the fact that Phyllis helped to revive their organization. She loved to travel with her family and enjoyed sewing and knitting.
Phyllis and her husband Jack owned and operated the Decatur Trunk (Luggage) Factory in Decatur, Ill., until their retirement. After retirement Phyllis and Jack moved to Elizabethton where they lived in the warmer months and stayed in Sebring, Fla., in the colder months. Phyllis and Jack made lots of friends in Florida and in Elizabethton.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Jack Meece; her daughter, Pam Johnson; and two grandchildren, Amanda Wortman and Tiffany Jones.
She is survived by her daughter, Debbie (Dave) Wortman of Johnson City; a son, Terry (Monica) Meece of Chattanooga; six grandchildren, Jack Meece, Tyler Meece, Minde Hurst, Nathan Johnson, Amy Strurer and Lindsey Higgins; and eight great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate the life of Phyllis I Meece will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 8, in the Sanctuary of Elizabethton First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Countiss and the Rev. Raymond Amos presiding. Music will be under the direction of Catherine Bunton. The family will receive friends in the Sanctuary of the church from 5 p.m. until the start of the service.
