City Engineering Department employees rescue pair of helpless puppies

Elizabethton Engineering Department employees Matthew Balogh and Dave Carney started their day on Wednesday just like any other day with a list of items that needed to be completed with one of those being to check on a paving project on Powder Branch Road.
However, on their way back to their office, taking a short cut that brought them out on Hart Road, the two men saw something in the road that brought a tug to their hearts.
Two female puppies, most likely siblings, appeared helpless and hopeless in the road with the need of rescuing oozing from their eyes. That’s when things changed for Carney, especially as the two pups were swooped up in the men’s arms and a search for their owners came up void after knocking on doors of residences around where the puppies were found.
“They looked lost but looked like they belonged together,” said Carney. “We brought them to the treatment plant and after thinking about what to do, I decided my dog at home needed some company so I took them home with me.”
Carney added that he did contact the animal shelter and provided a description of the puppies to be posted on the animal shelter’s website in case the owners were looking for the puppies.
The puppies are between three to five months old according to Carney, who added they still had some baby teeth left. Both received a flea bath and a good going over by Carney and his partner Emma before settling down in a crate their other dog occasionally used.
“I am not sure if they really have a home and if no one claims them I might keep them,” said Carney. “They slept soundly through the night in that crate.”
