Forest officials reopen Dennis Cove Campground

UNICOI— Cherokee National Forest officials will be reopening Dennis Cove Campground and a portion of the Appalachian Trail on the Watauga Ranger District beginning today. The Appalachian Trail from Moreland Gap to Dennis Cove, and from Dennis Cove down to Hampton is reopened.
On Aug. 14, a significant weather event impacted the Watauga Ranger District causing strong winds and downed trees. Crews have been continuously working on removing tree snags in the campground and trails, however, some overhead broken tree branches may still be encountered. Hikers and campers should exercise extreme caution when encountering broken overhead tree branches.
