A Johnson City woman was arrested Saturday on multiple charges after she reportedly assaulted an elderly man with a hammer.
Deputies arrested Rebecca Ray, 51, Johnson City, and charged her with aggravated assault, abuse of an elderly adult, assault on a first responder, and vandalism.
On Saturday afternoon, deputies of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Watauga after a 911 caller reported he had been assaulted and was bleeding. When deputies arrived, they spoke with the victim, identified as an 84-year-old male, and observed that his face and arms were covered in blood. The man told officers that Rebecca Ray had assaulted him with a hammer and may still be around the residence. Deputies then located Ray sitting in a black pickup truck at the residence, slumped over the steering wheel. Deputies stated when they attempted to wake Ray up, they could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her person and when Ray did awaken, she attempted to jerk away from officers. Officers then located a claw hammer in the vehicle seat where Ray had been that matched the description of the weapon given by the victim. Ray was taken into custody and the victim was transported to a local hospital by Carter County EMS. The victim’s daughter arrived on the scene and escorted deputies into the home, where several items were found to be damaged. The daughter stated the items were antiques and were valued at approximately $5,000.
Deputies transported Ray to the Carter County Detention Center and were in the process of taking photos of Ray due to the presence of blood on her hand. During this process, Ray spat on one of the deputies.
Ray was booked into the Carter County Detention Center, where she is being held on a $75,000 bond.
