Phillip Wayne Grindstaff, 80, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord following an extended illness on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. Phillip was born in Elizabethton to the late Fred R. Grindstaff and Bertie Nave Grindstaff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Adam Martin; two brothers, J.D. Grindstaff and Larry Grindstaff; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jim and Mable Snavely.
Phillip retired as a long-haul delivery driver and a United States Army veteran. Philip, along with his beloved wife, faithfully attended First Baptist Church of Elizabethton.
Daddy never knew a stranger. He loved people and was so very generous; he would give his last dollar to someone who needed it. He loved to tell stories that made people laugh, and his laughter was contagious! He also loved to play guitar and to sing, especially Johnny Cash. Daddy was a fisherman as well, and his fish tales grew each time he talked about his prize catch. Dad loved trucking and selling cars. Most of all, though, he loved his family and his friends.
Those left to remember and cherish Phillip’s memory include his wife, Joyce Snavely Grindstaff of the home; three children, Wendy Salyers and husband Jeff of Nashville and Jennifer Martin and husband David and Julie Wilcox and husband, Jon all of Elizabethton; his grandchildren, David Martin II and wife Shelley, Ellie Funk and husband Jeffrey, Cade Salyers, and Hank Wilcox; his great-grandchildren, Jolie Martin, Lily Martin and Judah Martin; and two sisters, Alma Bowers and Janet Oliver, both of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate and honor Phillip’s life will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 9, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Rev. David Martin II and Rev. Todd Hallman officiating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service.
The graveside service will follow in the Fred R. Grindstaff Cemetery in the Siam Community of Elizabethton. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Salyers, David Martin, Jon Wilcox, David Martin II, Cade Salyers, Jeffrey Funk, Andrew Gouge, John Gouge and Dan Foster. Honorary pallbearers will be the Meadows Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church of Elizabethton.
