“Canary’s Cry” is a brand-new production that is an Appalachian retelling of the story of Jonah. John (Jonah) is a young man with a call to evangelize on his life, but all he’s ever known are the mountains and valleys of Appalachia. Due to a tragedy in his family, he chooses to run away from his calling and instead become a coal miner, like his pa before him, so he can help his ma and his rambunctious little sisters.
Close family friends James and Ruby have their reservations about John going into the mine, but they do what they can to support the young man. However, danger is always hiding in the darkness of the mines. Will John carry on his family tradition of mining, or will he end up in the belly of “The Beast”?
“Canary’s Cry” will be presented every weekend from Friday, Sept. 6, through Sunday, Sept. 22, at LampLight Theatre, 140 Broad Street, Kingsport.
Admission is $15 for adults, $13 for senior adults, $10 for students, and free for children 5 and under. Coal miners, both retired and current, will receive free admission. Call for group rates.
Doors open one hour prior to the show.
