CITY OF ELIZABETHTON PIO
Friday marked another milestone in the career of Elizabethton CID Investigator David Peters, as it was the end of watch for the 25-year police veteran.
Surrounded by co-workers and family, Peters made it official by retiring from the Elizabethton Police Department. He was honored with a retirement cake and gifts from the department, while receiving plenty of love from his two grandchildren who attended his retirement party.
Peters served two five-year stints with the Carter County Sheriff’s Department before moving to the Elizabethton Police Department, where he has served for the last 15 years.
When asked about the biggest change in law enforcement during his career, Peters pointed to advances in technology.
“Some of the technological advances have been amazing,” Peters said. “We once solved a series of ATM thefts with cameras that capture photos of car tags. We traced the group back to Houston, Texas.”
Peters recalled one particular case that stood out in his mind.
“There was a domestic call between a son and a mother, and when I got there, the son had run into his grandmother’s house,” Peters said. “When I went into the house, the man doused himself in kerosene and set himself on fire, resulting in the house catching fire. I was able to get him out of the house.
“He survived but was badly injured and had to stay in the hospital for quite a while.”
Elizabethton Police Chief Jason Shaw congratulated Peters on his retirement and thanked him for his dedicated service to the department.
