The Gap Creek Bridge in Elizabethton is scheduled to re-open by the end of this week. Once opened, a red light will control traffic over the one-lane bridge.
“Reopening the Gap Creek Bridge has been a top priority,” said Carter County Mayor Patty Woodby. “We know how important this bridge is for our citizens and local businesses, and I appreciate the efforts of Highway Superintendent Shannon Burchett and the Tennessee Department of Transportation in making this happen.”
This one-lane traffic arrangement is designed to help ease traffic pressures in the area, particularly as the Broad Street Bridge remains closed. Community members are encouraged to plan their commutes accordingly and exercise patience as traffic flow adjusts.
“While this temporary solution is not ideal, it’s an important step in alleviating traffic congestion and providing some normalcy as we await the formal construction process,” Woodby said.
Residents who lost a private bridge are encouraged to apply for Individual Assistance from FEMA. The agency will cover the cost of replacing the bridge. The deadline to apply is Jan. 7.
